The Centre for Medical Psychology and Evidence-based Decision-making (CeMPED) is a cross-faculty/disciplinary University of Sydney research centre, currently employing more than 40 staff. CeMPED’s mission is to support excellent research across the interface of Psychology, Medicine and Public Health to answer questions about:

  • The behavioural factors which promote good health and prevent disease
  • Ways to enhance psychosocial adjustment of patients and carers
  • Ways to increase use of evidence in health-care decision-making
  • Ways to support patients to be more involved in their own health-care

With particular expertise in cancer care, CeMPED’s members have over 20 years of experience in this field.

 

CeMPED is currently seeking a skilled and dedicated part-time Research Nurse for a new NHMRC-funded research project examining the effect of a nurse and oncologist intervention to promote discussion about prognosis and end of life issues in patients with advanced, incurable cancer. You will be liasing with patients and carers, hospital staff and the research team and will also assist in the development and refinement of materials for the intervention. Excellent organisational and interpersonal skills as well as a strong research focus will be important.

 

This role will see you deliver an innovative nurse-led education and support program to patients and their caregivers in face-to-face meetings and via the telephone. As such, it is crucial that you have exceptional relationship building and communication skills and that you are confident and skilled in discussing difficult topics such as end of life care and prognosis. You will also assist the research team with recruitment and data collection, requiring a good understanding of human research ethics principals.

 

To succeed, you will need to be a Registered Nurse (or be eligible for registration in NSW) and have had previous experience in the cancer care and/or palliative care setting. Previous research experience or a postgraduate research qualification will be advantageous as will counselling or support service experience and patient health care education experience.

The position is part-time 2-3 days per week, fixed term until 2011, subject to the completion of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees. Membership of a University approved superannuation scheme is a condition of employment for new appointees.

 

Remuneration package Level 6: $72k - $78k pa pro rata (includes base salary $61k - $66k pa pro rata, leave loading and 17% employer’s contribution to superannuation).
